Rembrandt van Rijn was arguably the greatest Dutch painter. His life (1606-1669) provides a unique lens through which to understand the Dutch Golden age. In this three-hour walk, one of your tour guides in Amsterdam will lead you through the neighborhoods where he and his clients lived, thereby providing a view of the heady era of Dutch expansion and growth.
You'll begin in Rembrandt’s House, a small museum dedicated to the artist aen nd his time. One theme that will invariably arise is the diversity of religious groups living side-by-side in Amsterdam at the time. Rembrandt himself hailed from a Catholic and Protestant household, and many of his clients were Jewish, Mennonite, Calvinist, and from other groups. Using his artwork as a kind of textbook, we’ll discuss Dutch tolerance and how it laid the groundwork and tableau for social and economic success during the 17th century.
The walk will continue to the Nieuwmarkt, Waag, and East India House all of which connect Rembrandt to the economic miracle of 17th century Holland when the Dutch dominated world trade, particularly in Asia. Rembrandt’s work closely connected to this history, and many of his best-known paintings, such as the Night Watch, portray significant people of the time.
Then visit a number of less-well-known squares, streets, and buildings, each of which relate to the period or the painter, and along the way build a conversational portrait of Amsterdam during this period.
At the end, you'll finish with a strong understanding of Rembrandt and his ability to reflect the period in which he lived.
