Many Family Travel Concierge clients who are taking vacation in Europe are asking the same question: Can we rent apartment instead of hotel?
Sure, it can be done. We do it for ourselves when traveling with our three kids and I always help my clients to rent apartment if they insist. You might save some money when renting apartment, however you need to know that there are some risks.
Here are some facts
1. Be ready that the apartment would not look as advertized
2. Don't take anything for granted (linens, towels, dishes, A/C, elevators, and so on)
3. Apartment owners might not be at the apartment when you arrive
4. Using third party companies such as OneFineStay, HomeAway, Airbnb, and others might reduce (but not eliminate) possibility of fraud
5. Apartment owner might cancel reservation at the last moment
Sure, all that can happen if you decide on staying in hotel. However, in hotel it is less likely and usually you have much more reviews for hotels than for apartments.
What you might do to increase the chances of your vacation to be worry-free is the following:
Get hotel with connecting rooms instead
If you still want to rent apartment, narrow down to those that have many positive reviews (although from my experience reviews might not reflect true picture)
Ask many many questions: Exact address, what floor, how quiet, how many beds, whether they have everything described in ad (A/C, kitchen, stove, etc.), whether they have linens, towels, kettle, iron and anything you might need.
It would take a lot of time for research and we would do it for you if you would like to ensure pleasant vacation no matter whether you decide to stay in hotel or apartment.
